New California Law effective January 1st, 2012

Basically, as of January 1, 2012 the legislation levies civil penalties of between $5,000 and $15,000 for the "willful misclassification" of a worker in a business as an independent contractor, and expands the penalties to $10,000-25,000 if it is determined that the employer "is engaging in a pattern or practice of these violations."
